Union College Garnet Commons
Sano-Rubin was the Design-Builder for the new $8.5 million, 80-bed student apartment project located in the residential neighborhood adjacent to the Union College campus. The new building consists of 2, 3 and 4 single-occupancy bedrooms with full baths, living rooms and full kitchens and reflects the architectural features of the surrounding residential neighborhood. Additional building components include a central commons space, study areas and laundry on each floor.
During the Design Phase, the Team utilized a series of workshops to involve the College’s staff, students and facility department to develop the features most important to Union College. In keeping with the College’s Garnet Goes Green initiatives, the Team incorporated sustainable features such as a variable refrigerant flow system (VRF) to provide heating and air conditioning for the building. A rain garden and photovoltaic panels on the roof was funded through grants for student projects.
To meet the demand for new student housing, the College chose a fast-track delivery process. The project broke ground November 3, 2014 and was completed August 15, 2015 in time for student-athlete arrival.
