Sage Shea Learning Center
As general contractor, Sano-Rubin transformed the College’s 1950’s library into a modern teaching and learning center. The newly renovated 32,800 sf, 4-story building houses a learning commons, group study rooms, classrooms, seminar rooms, instructional technology rooms and a cafe. A new circulation desk is located on the first floor to provide student support and information technology services.
The project included the complete gut of all floors including mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems, asbestos and lead removals, installation of new 5-stop elevator and shaft, five new rooftop units (RTUs), all new windows, new generator for backup power, extension of back staircase to provide roof access, new handicap accessible toilet rooms on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd floors, custom built-in cabinetry in the Poetry Room, addition of a new fire sprinkler system throughout, as well as new interior finishes and lighting, The entire building exterior washed and windows and fascias painted.
The busy, urban campus located in the heart of downtown Troy, across the street from the Troy Public Library and County Courthouse provided logistical challenges. Safety for students, staff, residents and visitors was paramount. Sano-Rubin used signage and fencing to keep construction areas identified especially during the installation of a new water line to the Learning Center from the main on 2nd Street and raising the RTUs onto the roof.
To facilitate the project, the Sano-Rubin team used floor plans with assigned completion dates for areas to communicate expectations to the subcontractors and keep the project on schedule and staffed properly. Daily foreman meetings are being instituted during the critical scheduling periods to ensure coordination and progression of the work.
