Bellevue Woman’s Center (Ellis Medicine)
Sano-Rubin was the Construction Manager for the new 32,600 sf, 3-story addition consisting of an expanded Pharmacy on the middle level, 24-bed Nursing Unit with Lobby, Lounge and a centrally located nursing station on the upper level and Neil and Jane Golub Breast & Heart Health Center on the second floor. The existing 18,500 sf Mansion Building was demolished to make way for the new addition. Elements from the Mansion Building such as original dental trim, circled-headed window trim and fireplace surrounds were salvaged and incorporated into the new addition’s design.
Renovation work continued in other areas of the Hospital and included expansion of the existing main Lobby and a complete phased renovation of the staff station, NICU and Nursery areas. The entire project consisted of 4 major phases and numerous sub phases.
Sano-Rubin worked with Ellis Medicine and the architect during the preconstruction phase to provide over $500,000 in value engineering items to meet HUD budgetary requirements. Through savings achieved during the bidding and buyout process, Sano-Rubin was able to incorporate items originally removed from the project such as the trellis feature. Additional items funded through savings included upgrading the nurse call system and complete renovation of 7 patient rooms in the north wing .
During construction, we maintained constant communication with each department’s nurse manager and building manager as well as the design team to proactively manage the work with minimal disruption to staff, patients and newborns. A tunnel system was developed for corridors to isolate construction and allow work to continue around the passage ways to keep the hospital operational 24/7. Undocumented asbestos was discovered throughout the existing hospital extending the overall project schedule. Sano-Rubin was able to manage this work to complete the renovations 2-weeks ahead of schedule.
